This 1 day itinerary combines the tranquillity of the River Wye, the thrill of exploring bookshops, and the delightful canal-side experience, making for a truly perfect day in Hay-on-Wye.
While ideally, you’ll be able to spend a few days exploring this book-lovers paradise we have created an itinerary for you if you have one daily only. It’s a jam-packed day so you’ll want to be up and out early!
Table of Contents:
Start with Breakfast!
Hay on Way is a haven of independent business so you’ll be spoilt for choice when deciding where to enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee and a local pastry. We’d recommend The Old Electric Shop, this veggie cafe offers a wide range of drinks and snacks, as well as beautiful books, plants, homewares and vintage curios to buy.
Get your Spending Money
Another way that Hay-on-Wye is totally unique is that they actually have their own currency! While you don’t need it, why not head to the Hay Deli or another participating location to get some Hay money? It’s a souvenir that doubles as a spending spree pass. Choosing how much to exchange into Hay dollars can also keep you within budget! We’ve included this as part of the perfect One Day Itinerary for Hay-on-Wye as it’s such a unique thing to do!
Explore the Bookshops (We don’t say this lightly)
The entire town only spans around 1km but is home to over 25 bookshops! At the tourist information, you can pick up a map of the bookshops to ensure you don’t miss any! Or simply roam the quaint streets and you’re sure to find plenty of literature.
Head to the Canal for Lunch
After a morning of book shopping, you’re sure to be peckish. Head towards the charming canal area for lunch. If the weather is good, we recommend The Bean Box! Situated by the canal, it feels like you’re sitting in a secret garden, where you can enjoy speciality coffees and teas together with a small range of locally produced cakes and savouries. All toasties can be made vegan with the addition of vegan cheese.
Stroll Along the River Wye
After your lunch, take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque River Wye. It’s the perfect way to let your lunch settle, while you take in some of the beautiful surroundings. It’s likely you’ll see people kayaking and even a few swans.
More Bookshop Exploration
Continue your bookish adventure by visiting other iconic bookshops, make sure not to miss Hay Cinema Bookshop, North Books, Gay on Wye and Murder and Mayhem. These were just a few of our favourites. Each shop is extremely distinct, each with different offerings from the last.
However, if books aren’t your thing (weirdo) there are plenty of other shops to explore.
Visit Hay Castle
If you’ve had your fill of exploring the town, head up to the historic Hay Castle, which often hosts events and exhibitions. The castle is not just a piece of history but a vibrant part of Hay’s cultural scene. You can pay for a private tour, or simply enjoy the grounds and cafe for free. Make sure you walk up to the town of the steps for a stunning view of Hay on Wye.
Sunset at Hay Bluff
If you have the energy, consider a short drive to Hay Bluff for a stunning view of the sunset. The panoramic views of the surrounding countryside are breathtaking. However, if you’re ready to wind down for the evening, conclude your day with dinner at a local eatery. Choose from the town’s diverse culinary offerings and savour a delicious meal before bidding farewell to the enchanting town of books.
